The Edinburgh Journal of Natural History (coloured plates)
Smith Elder and Co, Edinburgh, 1835-1839
Folio (13 by 9 inches) 1835-39, illustrated with 85 hand coloured engraved plates. Original boards with leather spine, covers worn but sound. Most plates with minor thumbing in the lower margins, some plates with tears, mostly short but 8 plates with slightly longer tears just affecting the image and 2 plates badly torn and crudely repaired. Despite the faults this is a presentable copy in clean, sound condition and with very attractive plates.
There are 30 plates of animals, 46 of birds, 2 of shells and 1 each of beetles and butterflies. They are multi-image plates (except for 1 full-page image of a giraffe and 4 others of animals with two images per plate), skilfully drawn with coloured figures on a decorative plain background. The complete work has 130 plates but is usually found incomplete as it was issued in parts over several years.
A rare work with a wealth of fine natural history plates.
