A large porfolio (23 by 18 inches) 1923 illustrated with 21 (of 25) coloured mezzotint portraits of famous Britons, the plates all taken from well-known paintings of the subjects, each plate in a thin card mount and with a separate leaf of biographical text and details of the original painting, loose as issued in green cloth portfolio.

The plates vary in size but mostly have a plate mark of around 13 by 10 inches, each signed in pencil by the engraver. A rare work, limited to 400 copies, and hardly ever found complete. This is the first series (of four) each with 25 plates. The set here offered includes portraits of Sir Isaac Newton, Lord Byron, George Eliot, Mrs. Siddons, William Wilberforce, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. John Hunter and John Milton.

A few mounts slightly worn but all the plates are in excellent condition.
