thick octavo 22 by 14.5 cm ( 8.7 by 5.8 inches) The manuscript for this work was bought after the author's death by Queen Victoria who had a small number of copies privately printed. This copy was presented by Prince Albert to Mr R Macandrew. It's superbly bound in full morocco and richly decorated in gilt with gilt edges. The text runs to 507 pages including index and is illustrated with a coloured folding geological map, 6 black and white plates, 8 text engravings and a folding map. A serious work by noted naturalist covering most aspects of the natural history of the area. Occasional light foxing, heavier on the frontispiece and its tissue guard, end-papers slightly discoloured, very light rubbing of the front joint and corners. An exceptional copy of a rare work
